Using a Hashtag For Your Wedding

Using a Hashtag

If you decide against asking your guests to pack away their smart phones and cameras for your wedding, you’ll want to be sure to ask your guests to use a hashtag when posting pictures of your wedding on social media. Using a hashtag for your wedding will help you filter through social media to find any fun candid’s or group shots that your guests took during your ceremony or reception, your hashtag will help you immediately identify those images upon upload.

Choosing a Hashtag

Having trouble choosing a hashtag for your wedding? Most couples opt to use a hashtag surrounding their last name and/or year of their wedding, ex: #geller2016 or #gellerwedding2016. Choosing a hashtag for your wedding may prove problematic if your last name is a common one, for example if your last name is ‘Smith’, chances are that #smith2016 or #smithwedding2016 is already in use and you wouldn’t want to mix your guests photos with another couples wedding pictures (do a quick search before hand to see if any of the hashtags you have in mind may already be in use). Here is where you can be creative! Marry your last name with another unique identifier of your wedding, it can be your wedding venue, an aspect of your theme, color palette, or even the season in which your wedding occurs, ex: #springintosmith or #silversmith. Want to add some fun into your hashtag selection? Ask your guests! Take a poll on your wedding website or social media, or even include a small poll on your guest’s RSVP card, you may be surprised at how creative some of your friends and family can be, it’ll also keep them guessing as to what your final decision was until the day of. If you choose a hashtag that was suggested by your guests be sure to give them a special ‘shout out’ or thank you on  your wedding day!

Displaying Your Hashtag

On the day of your wedding be sure to get your guests involved by displaying your hashtag! If you worked with an Etsy shop or a calligrapher for any of your stationery needs, they will also be able to create a small ‘hashtag sign’ which can be used to display at your welcome table, candy bar, favor station, or even beside your table numbers at your reception. If you opt not to display your hashtag, another way to get your guests involved with using your hashtag is to have your wedding DJ or band make an announcement.
