Bright and Cheerful Relaxed Romantic DC Wedding

Abby and Will met on a sunny afternoon in 2013 during spring break in Puerto Vallerta, Mexico. Both were there to escape the cold and snowy Syracuse winter and take some time to relax before the last few months of school. Will was reading a dorky book (the Illiad on spring break??) and Abby was hiding under a towel already sunburned (after only one day) – little did they know that these circumstances would bring them together.

After spending some time getting to know each other, they were inseparable for the rest of their time at ‘Cuse. Their careers took them to separate cities after graduation, and they took a bit of time apart from each other. A few years later Abby was in graduate school in Chicago and Will had a job interview in the Windy City. He claimed it was a weekend long interview, but Abby’s suspicions were that he just wanted to spend time together… Although he didn’t get the job, they rekindled their relationship and were soon back together for good.

Fast forward to March of 2018 when Abby and Will took another spring break trip, this time to the Dominican Republic. It was a bit classier than the first trip (no foam parties or tequila shots), and even more special because they got engaged! After a long journey they are very excited to get married and begin the next adventure of their life together.

How did you meet?

We met on spring break, how cliche! Neither of us expected to meet the love of our life at a nightclub in Mexico but it happened. We both went to Syracuse University (Go Orange!) and had booked the same hotel with a mutual friend group. After meeting at the hotel pool, sharing a first kiss at a foam party, and splitting a bottle of aloe after some gnarly sunburns we ended up going back to campus and making it official.

What is your proposal story?

Spring break is apparently a theme for us…Abby was in graduate school and we decided to go on a trip for spring break down to the Dominican Republic. We stayed at a beautiful resort on the beach. The first afternoon we were there Will couldn’t wait any longer and when sitting on the patio of our hotel room proposed to Abby!

Tell us a little a bit about your wedding.

We first came up with a short list of words we wanted to describe our wedding and tried to center every decision around them…Fun, relaxed, romantic, and authentic. We were focused on making decisions that felt like ‘us’ rather than for appearances. Also we wanted things to be bright and cheerful which is how we landed on our color palette of yellows, oranges, maroon, and navy.

Location was also really important to us because we wanted things to be easy to plan but also knew that a lot of family and friends were traveling just for this event so we wanted everything to be super convenient (we’ve all been to weddings that are logistically challenging and we didn’t want that experience for our guests).

Tell us about your attire choices.

We were focused on feeling natural in our clothes, but also knew it was a once in a lifetime chance to splurge and ‘go big’ – for Abby that meant more form fitting and daring than normal, if I wasn’t going to go all in for my wedding than when would I?! For Will he was focused on high quality and perfectly fitting so got a custom suit. For our wedding party we didn’t want black tie which was too formal for our tastes, but still wanted our friends and family to class it up. Choice for bridesmaids was also important to Abby who only gave them a color guide and left everything else up to them.

What was the most important to the two of you while planning? Was there anything that you chose to splurge on or skip?

Photography was really important (shout out to Adam! Amazing!) because we knew we wanted the memories to last forever and have them captured in an authentic and colorful way. We also were focused on decisions that weren’t overly orchestrated or stuffy, again the goal was to be fun and relaxed. We also skipped live music in favor of a DJ to ensure we could have a wide variety of music, enough space for a dance floor, and decided that the investment just wasn’t worth it.
