Adam and Elizabeth created a completely intentional non-traditional wedding day. They chose to get ready together at Queen’s Landing Hotel in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Then host their 25 guests for dinner in the Barrel Cellar at Trius Winery. Then changed outfits and brought their guests to the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory at the Niagara Botanical Gardens for an intimate wedding ceremony among the butterflies. After the ceremony they celebrated with their guests at Oast House Brewers in Niagara.

The Niagara Butterfly Conservatory is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Niagara region. It’s easy to see why – with acres of lush gardens and a butterfly pavilion that houses thousands of brightly colored butterflies, it’s a feast for the eyes! No wonder Elizabeth and Adam chose to get married here.
How did you meet?
In residence at University, and never we’ve never looked back!
What is your proposal story?
We were on a weekend trip to Niagara on the Lake, and had a picnic in the corner of our go-to park with homemade sandwiches and veggies. It’s not the most jaw-dropping proposal story, but it’s very ‘us’!
Tell us a little a bit about your wedding
We wanted a simple wedding where our guests could enjoy each other’s company, good food and drinks. We chose Niagara-on-the -Lake since it’s our favourite weekend destination, and we wanted our guests to enjoy all it has to offer with us. We started at Trius Winery for dinner, then to the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory for our ceremony and to the Oast House Brewery for celebratory beers and snacks. We chose to rent a bus so the transitions were easy for our guests and we knew they had a safe ride home.
Tell us about your attire choices.
Casual! We wanted our guests to feel comfortable in what turned out to be the hottest day of the year! Adam chose separate pieces from his favourite local clothing store (forget the suit!). I love sewing and chose to make my dress. I make most of my clothes so making my wedding dress was a no brainer. I altered a Vogue 9075 pattern to suit my body and my fabric was a silk 4 ply crepe from Mood Fabrics.
What was the most important to the two of you while planning? Was there anything that you chose to splurge on or skip?
Our priority was to make sure our guests were comfortable, had good food, great drinks from our favourite spots and a safe ride home. We chose to have a small wedding so we could have these things.
What were your favorite parts of the day?
We should say our nuptials, but in reality it was delicious food, great beer and good company!
Tell us about your wedding flowers.
Pammett’s Flowers always does beautiful floral arrangements. I gave them a few vague ideas of what I wanted and they gave me the most show stopping bouquet in return. They are true floral artists.
Tell us about your wedding cake.
Our wedding cake was from Hurst Bakery, it was a simple cake with a special topper from our dear friends.
What did you do for favors?
Nothing!
Please describe any DIY, handmade, or personal details.
I hand sewed my wedding dress and wore my grandmothers brooch – just costume jewelry but special to me.
Did you include any family heirlooms or special traditions?
My parents gave me a keepsake six pence for my shoe, to be passed on to our children.
